Groups define the areas of interest within your community. Some groups you will be able to join without requesting membership; others, however, you can join only by requesting membership or by being invited by the group owner.

The following table describes the group types and how you can join each type.

Group type How to join
Joinless You are a member of Joinless groups by default. You do not have to request membership nor be invited to join by the group owners. The functionality available to you depends upon your group permissions.
Public

There are two types of public groups: Open and Closed.

  • Public open - You can view the group and group information and can join by clicking the Join Group link. You do not have to request membership or await approval from the group owner.

  • Public closed - You can view the group and group information but you must request membership to join the group by clicking the Join Grouplink.

A dialog window displays in which you can send a join request to the group owner.

Private

There are two types of private groups: Listed and Unlisted.

  • Private listed - You can view the group name in the group list but you cannot access the group.

When you click the group name, you are provided a membership contact dialog window. The contact is sent to the group owner, who can then approve you for membership.

  • Private Unlisted - You cannot view the group name in the group list. You must be invited to join via email by the group owner.

We provide two groups by default:

Name Type Parent Description
Site Root Joinless None Required group for all community sites as it provides the over-arching parent group to which all other groups belong. You cannot delete this group.
Administrators Private unlisted Site Root Group that includes two forums:
  • Reporting Forums to which all forum posts that have been reported as abuse are moved.
  • Deleted Posts to which all forum posts that have been deleted are moved.
By default, the "admin" user is group owner, so this is the only member who can see and access this group and its content. As an administrator, you may want to add any other administrators and/or moderators as members of this group as well so that deleted and reported posts are managed effectively.

Groups can include zero or more of each application type (blog, wiki, forum, file gallery), depending on the requirements for each group.

Read more about applications and the configuration options available.
