A URL redirect allows you to redirect users who hit a now-unused or out-of-date URL to a new or updated page. In Telligent Community, these redirects are created in a URL redirect list.

Create a URL redirect

To create a URL redirect:

  1. Navigate to Control Panel Dashboard > System Administration > Site Administration > Site Content > Manage URL Redirects.

The URL redirects page displays the list of redirects in the workspace.

  2. Enter the URL data:

    • Redirect URL - The target Web page where users will be redirected.
    • Description - Description of  the redirect URL.
  3. Click Create. Telligent Community automatically assigns an ID to the URL redirect, for example http://172.16.1.17/r.ashx?5.

  4. Click View. Telligent Community displays the URL in a dialog box. Copy the URL in the box and paste it where you want users to click from to view the target page.

Example of using a URL redirect

For example, say we create a blog post to direct users to our Web site.

We create a URL redirect as shown above, using http://Telligent.com as our redirect URL (then clicking Create).

We click View to see what redirect URL Telligent Community has generated.

We copy the URL in the URL field (highlighted above in red).

We edit our blog post and add the URL we copied as a link on the text we want users to click, then click Publish.

Users click on the Telligent.com link in the blog post.

The Telligent home page (our target URL) appears.

    Manage a URL redirect

View the number of hits it receives

Once you create a URL redirect, you can track the number of hits the redirect receives.

Navigate to Control Panel Dashboard > System Administration > Site Administration > Site Content > Manage URL Redirects. The hits column displays how many times the URL redirect link you created and placed on the content (such as in the blog post) has been hit to view the target page.

    Edit the redirect

On the Manage URL Redirects page, you can edit the URL target or description (as shown in step 1 above) without affecting the number of hits the redirect has received. You cannot change the redirect itself (e.g., http://172.16.1.17/r.ashx?5).

    1. Navigate to Control Panel Dashboard > System Administration > Site Administration > Site Content > Manage URL Redirects.
    2. Beside the redirect you want to change, click Edit. The URL redirect editing page appears.
    3. Update the redirect URL (target) or description.
    4. Click Update.

    Delete the redirect

When you delete the redirect, your link from the source will remain the same (such as /r.ashx?5), but clicking this link will simply land you on the community home page. You can't reuse an old redirect URL that you've deleted; each redirect is a new iteration.

    1. Navigate to Control Panel Dashboard > System Administration > Site Administration > Site Content > Manage URL Redirects.
    2. Beside the redirect you want to delete, click Delete
    3. Click OK in the confirmation dialog box.
